History of Stoughton, WI
Luke Stoughton, of Janesville, explored the area in 1847 and was struck by its immense possibilities, so he decided to purchase the land. He discovered the Catfish River (now the Yahara River) was the perfect location for sawmills and gristmills and quickly platted his village. Stoughton built a sawmill, hired millers, and encouraged teachers, blacksmiths, doctors, and shop owners of all kinds to settle there. He even donated land for a right of way and a depot, ensuring the railroad would reroute its track through town. After wheat crops failed in Stoughton, tobacco farming became common, attracting a flood of immigrants from Norway. Today, Stoughton is best known for its rich Norwegian heritage, which the town celebrates each May with a festival on Syttende Mai, the Norwegian Independence Day Read more about Stoughton’s history here.
